Paul Bastian has been the National President of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union since December 2009 and was appointed Acting National Secretary in March 2012. From 1997 until December 2009, Paul was Secretary of the AMWU NSW Branch. Paul is a Shipwright by trade and holds a Law Degree from the University of Technology, Sydney.
He was a Foundation Member of the NSW Workers Compensation Advisory Council and an Executive Board member of the ACTU charity, Australian People for Health Education & Development Abroad (APHEDA). He is a Director of the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute and previously was a Director of the NSW Industry Capabilities Network.
Paul represents the AMWU on a number of parliamentary groups, including the Steel Industry Innovation Council, the Asbestos Management Review Advisory Group and the Skilled Migration Consultative Panel. He also sits on the ACTU Vocational Education & Training Committee and the ACTU International Committee.
As NSW Secretary, was a Foundation Member of the NSW Manufacturing Council.
Paul is a powerful advocate for secure and long term employment for our members in manufacturing through research and innovation, skills development, targeted industry policy and increasing the number, and quality, of apprenticeships.
