A 10 000 tonne manufacturing contract on Chevron’s Gorgon Project has been awarded to Henderson based engineering and fabrication firm Civmec.
The Civmec contract comes on top of two other Gorgon contracts won by AGC last month.
AMWU WA Secretary, Steve McCartney, welcomed the project saying that it was another victory for the AMWU’s WA Jobs from WA Resources campaign.
“We have no doubt that this contract has been awarded due to public pressure from our members to ensure that we start to receive more benefits from the resources boom,” Mr McCartney said.
“Six months ago companies such as Chevron were sending all of their steel contracts offshore, so the recent awarding of contracts to both Civmec and Ausclad Group is very welcome.”
“We expect around 400 jobs will be created in Henderson and Kwinana and we welcome the commitment from both AGC and Civmec to employ a significant number of apprentices,” he said.
The AMWU is continuing the campaign to bring more work back into local workshops.
AMWU National Secretary, Dave Oliver, said the WA branch should be proud of the success the campaign had achieved.
“Across the country our union is fighting to see the use of local industry and jobs in major projects.
“It is a difficult fight, but breakthroughs like we’ve seen in WA demonstrate why it’s worth standing up and campaigning to ‘make it here’.”
