The Queensland Branch of the AMWU has called on union members around Australia to support Queenslanders impacted by the recent floods by donating to a newly established national disaster account.
AMWU State Secretary Andrew Dettmer said all money raised in the account would go directly to the recovery process.
“This is an important way for our large union membership to show solidarity and make a positive difference to these devastated communities.
“The floods have had an impact on tens of thousands of AMWU members, their homes and workplaces in Rockhampton, Brisbane, Toowoomba and throughout the south-east and central Queensland,” he said.
“Their physical and emotional recovery will be a very costly and challenging one. They, along with other Queenslanders, will be without work and permanent shelter for many weeks to come.”
The Queensland Branch has kick started the appeal by donating $20,000 to the account.
“Any financial assistance our members can make to those affected will make a significant difference to easing their burden.”
In recent years AMWU members have raised tens of thousands of dollars for survivors of Victoria’s Black Saturday fires and the families of the New Zealand mine disaster.
All monies raised through the AMWU’s national disaster account will be directed to the Queensland Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal.
To donate to the fund you can either make an electronic fund transfer (EFT) or by completing this form and sending it to the address listed.
