Changes to ACT Workers Comp could hurt workers

The ACT Government has released a draft proposal to change the ACT Workers Compensation Act. The ACT scheme covers most employees in the ACT private sector.

ACT AMWU organiser Jane Timbrell said that unions are concerned the proposal will removal workers’ protection under common law in the case of employer negligence.

There are a number of other significant changes that could adversely affect AMWU members. These include reductions to payments for injured workers, reductions to health and safety education and training rights, and fewer rights for workers to choose their own medical practitioners.

On the plus side, the changes will increase death benefits from $150 000 to $450 000 and funeral benefits from $4 000 to $9 000.

Further details are available in this document.

AMWU CAMPAIGN

The AMWU is preparing a submission on the proposals due at the end of November.

Industrial officers from the AMWU are visiting as many factories and workplaces as possible to alert members to the changes and seeking signatures for a petition to the ACT Government.

The AMWU is working with UnionsACT to ensure that the Government does not table the legislation in the second week of December as indicated by the Minister.

Unions want time to address the written and verbal submissions before the legislation goes to parliament.

Should the Government table the legislation, there will be a demonstration in Canberra at the time of the tabling.

The unions will be lobbying the Green member of the minority Government and running a public campaign in the new year.

AMWU members who want more information and want to get involved are encouraged to call the AMWU Canberra office on 6273 2412.
