Abbott can’t be trusted on WorkChoices

Tony Abbott has blown his credibility and admitted that he can’t be trusted not to bring back WorkChoices, according to the National Secretary of the AMWU, Dave Oliver.

In an extraordinary admission on ABC TV’s 7.30 Report, Mr Abbott stated that he only honours “considered, prepared, scripted” remarks and his word can’t be trusted.

Kerry O’Brien: How are we to know when we're hearing your true position and when you're fudging the truth?

TONY ABBOTT: … I think we know when we can put absolute weight on what's being said and when it's just the give and take of standard conversation

AMWU National Secretary Dave Oliver said Mr Abbott is clearly duplicitous and not fit to be Prime Minister of Australia.

“Every time Mr Abbott makes a statement the Australian people will not know whether we can trust him. We can’t trust him when he says he won’t bring back WorkChoices. We can’t trust him when he says he won’t reintroduce AWA’s.

“Mr Abbott aspires to be Prime Minister of Australia, but if the Australian people vote for Tony Abbott, which version of Tony Abbott will they get?”

In his Budget reply speech last week, Mr Abbott committed the Liberal Party to bringing back key elements of WorkChoices.

He promised to wind back unfair dismissal protection and reintroduce individual contracts.

He has also promised to allow employers use individual contracts that undercut basic award conditions like minimum hours of work.

Mr Oliver said Australian workers deserve better.

“The Australian people voted against WorkChoices in 2007 but now Mr Abbott wants to reintroduce the harshest aspects of that legislation under a new name. He should stop trying to con Australian workers because we will not buy his lies.”
