$10, 000 scholarship to study cutting-edge technology overseas

Skilled trades workers have been given the chance to improve their skills by studying overseas thanks to an Innovation Program Study Award being run by Manufacturing Skills Australia.

The Study Award will fund an overseas study trip for a worker wishing to learn more about a specific new skill or technology. From non-destructive testing innovations in Israel, to apprenticeship mentoring programs in South Africa or union involvement in British workplace training and assessment, there is a wide scope of possible projects.

As well as providing an exciting experience and career boost for the winner, the Innovation Program is aimed at keeping Australia at the cutting-edge of manufacturing technologies by enhancing the skills and knowledge of Australian workers in the manufacturing and automotive industries.

Workplace assessors, enterprise employees and owners are all eligible to apply, as well as VET students and teachers. There are no age or background limitations, and formal qualifications are not needed.

The recipient is expected to spend three to four weeks overseas in a self-directed study tour, which may include visiting industry and educational institutions.

National Coordinator of the AMWU Skilled Trades Committee, Ian Curry, has welcomed the initiative.

“We strongly encourage our members to apply for the Study Award if they’re interested in innovations which will benefit Australian manufacturing industries. The award isn’t designed just for academics or professional researchers, it’s open to manufacturing workers, VET students and trainers across a broad range of areas that our members are active in.”

The AMWU strongly supported the establishment of the program and Mr Curry said the award will help encourage innovation and skill development in the industry.

“Skills and workforce development are critical to the future of all areas of manufacturing, and we encourage all our members and delegates to participate in the Program.”

Applications for the Award close on Friday 28 May.
