Young workers enrolling in their apprenticeship have been signing up to the AMWU across NSW.
The NSW Skilled Trades committee and Growth Unit have teamed up and are attending TAFE enrolment days to talk to apprentices about the union and make sure they know what being in the union is all about.
Teams of AMWU officials and activists attended the first day of enrolments on Thursday, and will continue doing so over the next few weeks.
“Going to the TAFEs on enrolement day is a new thing, but it seems to have been a success so far,” said organiser Daniel Kyriacou.
Many apprentices had questions about what the union did and how it could help, which backs up research that shows young people are not as likely to understand what being in the union means.
“That’s why its so important that we are at these days to meet them and their parents and give out information”.
“Most people we spoke to have been happy to hear what we have to say and a lot have signed up on the spot”.
“The most important thing is that apprentices see the union from their first day on the job, and that they know there is somewhere they can go if they need advice or get into trouble.
